Vaccines and Diagnostics

Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics DivisionThe Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Division provides more than 20 products to fight vaccine-preventable viral and bacterial diseases, and makes sophisticated equipment to test blood donations for infections. Novartis formed this division when it acquired Chiron Corporation in 2006.


The division consists of two businesses - Novartis Vaccines and Chiron, the blood testing business.

 

Novartis Vaccines

By focusing on disease prevention, Novartis Vaccines plays a key role in the company's core mission: keeping people healthy, alleviating suffering and enhancing quality of life.
The current vaccine portfolio includes vaccines to prevent:

  • Influenza
  • Meningitis
  • Rabies
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Tick-borne encephalitis
  • Haemophilus Influenzae type B (Hib)
  • Polio
  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

 

Chiron: the blood testing business

As the world leader in blood safety for the transfusion industry, Chiron develops novel tools, products and services to protect the global blood supply.

Screening blood is critical to patient health. A single unit of infected blood may infect up to four transfusion recipients or more than 1 000 other units of blood used to manufacture blood-derived products.

Chiron products are used to test more than 25 million blood donations annually around the world, preventing thousands of transfusion-transmitted diseases. Chiron now provides products to test blood donations for HIV (the AIDS virus), HCV, hepatitis B and West Nile Virus.
