About Novartis

People and communities

Novartis human rights

We strive to provide our associates with the safest possible workplace and to promote their health and well-being. We are an integral part of the communities that host our operations. We pay living wages worldwide, contributing to the stability and prosperity of these communities. Every April, our Community Partnership Day provides an opportunity for our associates to express their personal commitment to corporate citizenship.

Human rights

Human rights are cross-cutting issues that affect all areas of our business, from the research and development of medicines to manufacturing, distribution and administration. Novartis has a longstanding commitment to human rights and was among the first signatories of the United Nations Global Compact in 2000.

We adopt a proactive approach to human rights across all of our businesses. Through the think-tank work of theĀ Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, we are helping to redefine the role business can play in promoting all human rights, especially the right to health.

Our workforce
Novartis was among the first international companies to make a voluntary commitment to define and pay living wages to employees around the world. By paying a living wage, we endorse the right to an appropriate standard of living that guarantees health and well-being for a family.

Our patients
The right to health is of core importance in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in the developing world. We work to address healthcare-related human rights issues &msdash; including patient safety, privacy and informed consent in clinical trials.
